Course description:
Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions and energy transfers that occur continuously in cells or living organisms. The study of metabolic regulation allows us to understand the mechanisms by which metabolic pathways adapt to conditions imposed by the environment or by the organism's physiological activity. It covers metabolic pathways, that is, sequences of chemical reactions catalyzed at the cellular level by enzymes, enabling either the synthesis of compounds (anabolic pathways) or the degradation of molecules or biomolecules (catabolic pathways), as well as the specific characteristics of the main organs involved in human metabolism.

Target audience:
Third-year Biochemistry students
Sector of Biological and Agricultural Sciences
Field of Natural and Life Sciences
General objectives:The emphasis will be placed on the metabolic and tissue interrelationships between the major pathways of degradation and biosynthesis of biological molecules and on regulatory processes. Particular attention will be paid to the pathological consequences resulting from metabolic dysfunction.
