Chapters 1 to 7 provide a comprehensive and structured overview of the essential aspects of the assessment, maintenance, repair, and strengthening of construction structures, with particular emphasis on concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures. These chapters address the key stages in the life cycle of a structure: from the initial diagnosis (Chapter 1) and identification of pathologies (Chapter 2), through structural investigation techniques (Chapter 3), selection of repair materials (Chapter 4), repair methods (Chapter 5), and structural strengthening (Chapter 6), to long-term monitoring and maintenance (Chapter 7).
These subjects, which are fundamental to civil engineering, aim to ensure user safety, extend the service life of structures, and optimize their functionality in response to environmental, mechanical, and regulatory challenges. By combining theoretical approaches, practical techniques, and modern technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, these chapters provide a rigorous methodological framework for engineers, infrastructure managers, and decision-makers.
Whether dealing with buildings, bridges, tunnels, or dams, the common objective is to maintain structural integrity while complying with international standards (Eurocodes, ASTM, etc.) and minimizing costs and environmental impacts.

Welcome to the Real Civil YouTube channel. In this video, we are going to explore the differences between repair, rehabilitation, and retrofitting. These terminologies are fundamental in civil engineering, particularly in concrete technology or the repair of concrete structures. Often, these terms can be confusing. Therefore, in this video, we aim to clarify the distinctions. We will outline the variances based on their definitions, applications, examples, and importance. Our face book page : real civil :

Repair :
Definition : Measures to restore the integrity of structure
Example: Patching cracks, filling potholes, replacing damaged components
Importance: Repair helps to address immediate issues and prevent further deterioration, extending the lifespan of the structure
Rehabilitation
Definition : Measures to upgrade the distressed structure for improved performance
Examples: Strengthening weak foundations, upgrading outdated systems, enhancing durability
Importance: extend the service life of a structure and enhance its performance to meet current standards and needs
Retrofitting
Definition : Measure to improve resistance to seismic activity or new design standards
Example: Adding steel braces to reinforce a building against earthquakes
Advantage: Retrofitting enhances the safety, resilience, and sustainability of structures, ensuring they can withstand future challenges functionality

It's not unusual for concrete structures to exhibit cracking and spalling. While these common signs of deterioration are often due to common causes, they can also point to unusual circumstances that require an outside-the-box investigative approach. In this webinar, materials engineer Todd Nelson and structural engineer Josh White focus on two distinctive projects involving cracks and spalls that resulted from uncommon structural and materials failures. The presenters discuss the process of conducting a structural and materials investigation and how, in these projects, the investigative process helped identify unique conditions that led to the failure.
